Am I the only one who thinks it’s kind of weird that they don’t make a bigger deal of the fact that students are getting Petrified?

orbitting-earth answered: I don’t think 1st years CAN’T be on the Quidditch teams they just usually aren’t because they prob aren’t good. They aren’t allowed a broom.
“‘He’s just the build for a Seeker, too,’ said Wood, now walking around Harry and staring at him. ‘Light - speedy - we’ll have to give him a decent broom, Professor - a Nimbus Two Thousand or a Cleansweep Seven, I’d say.’
'I shall speak to Professor Dumbledore and see if we can't bend the first-year rule. Heaven knows, we need a better team than last year Flattened in that last match by Slytherin, I couldn't look Severus Snape in the face for weeks …'” (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter 9, The Midnight Duel)
I always understood this as being about first-years in the Quidditch team. But when you look at what Wood says just before, what you say makes more sense. That is still bending the rules for Gryffindor though. And the school giving him a broom - the best broom there was at that time - still seems unfair to me to the other Houses. But yeah, I guess you are right and I was wrong. :)

I’ve been rereading Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone lately. And it is really disturbing how horrible the Dursleys treat Harry. Ofcourse, I knew this but I’ve never really thought about it I guess. I mean if you think about it, Harry has been there since he was 1. Was he sleeping under the stairs as a baby, a toddler? Was he given proper food? Who taught him how to walk, to talk?
Also, Dumbledore leaving a little infant at some doorsteps, knowing that he won’t be found for hours, seems very irresponsible to me. Even if you don’t think about the fact his parents were just killed and the people that live there are not going to want him anyway. Or the fact somebody just tried to kill him.
But Harry is introduced to the wizarding world and instantly befriend Ron and Hagrid and it’s cutest thing ever.
Then, there is the rule of first years not being on the quidditch team. Harry can though, because …. he is awesome? No explanation giving there. McGonnagall wants to have him on the team because Gryffindor hasn’t won a game for some time. And Dumbledore is just like, fine, go ahead, I like gryffindor best anyway. How unfair is that?
Last, who keeps giant monsters that could easily kill people in a school where a lot of kids live? And the best protection they use for it is a spell first years can do?
